A photograph of a pristine portion of the Lander Cutoff, of the Oregon Trail silhouettes a sunset against the Wind River Mountain Range.

A Landscape-level Overview grant was obtained by the BLM, Pinedale Field Office in 2002 to document the current state of the trail. The Lander Trail in this area was first documented as early as 1812 when returning Astorian Robert Stuart followed a Native American travois trail on the same journey in which he "discovered" South Pass.
